10 VRAGEN AAN… ENZO CATELLANI

What was your first design? My first lamp, which is still in production,  is ‘Lampadina’. How did you start as a designer? I had a lighting shop and many designs on my mind. Which of your design are you most proud of? I’m very proud of a particular lighting product, named ‘Albero della Vita’, which was installed in Dresden in 1994.  It is 5 meters high, with 252 bulbs, to make 3780W in total. How long have you been in this business? I started the production of my lamps in 1989. Just lamps or other designs as well? Just lamps, but on demand also particular products, out collection. What is the biggest difference in the design world when you first started compared to now?   Technology is the biggest difference. If you would not have become a designer, what other profession would you have chosen? I would have been a fisherman… What design would you like to make but still didn't have the guts or opportunity to do so? I would have made ‘Tizio’ by Shapper or ‘Arco’ by  Castiglioni,  but this is impossible, because they have already done it. To what degree do you use new lighting techniques and design techniques? (for instance LED, 3d design software and rapid prototyping? I would classify these techniques by placing draft prototyping as first,  LED as second and design software as last, because I don’t use it. Who shall we ask the next 10 questions? I would suggest Axel Meise, since I think highly of him. For more info : www.catellanismith.com
