Bake Me a Cake @ Northern Lighting
Northern Lighting presents a brand new table lamp called BAKE ME A CAKE. It is a charming and playful table lamp made of oak wood and smoked, tinted glass. Simply lift up the glass to change the bulb. The lamp offers a dim light. BAKE ME A CAKE is made in prison! The lamp is actually manufactured and quality controlled by inmates of the Bergen Prison in Norway, via a unique collaboration between the designers, the Norwegian correctional services and Northern Lighting. The goal is to create a high quality design production inside of Norwegian prisons, where we challenge the inmates’ thoughts and actions. The project’s name originates from the classic story about “The cake with the file”, from the cartoon world where a mum adds a file inside of a cake she bakes for her beloved, imprisoned son to help him escape. The project aims to create meaningful activities for the inmates, whilst they are still in prison. The design is by Morten & Jonas, two guys working together as a design team within the fields of furniture design and interior architecture. Both are educated with a Masters degree in design from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway. They work with both social related work and commercial projects and producers, often trying to interconnect and bridge these two worlds. ”We have experienced some success regarding our work towards the Norwegian correctional services where we currently are working with how we can use design as a tool to develop and strengthen their production activities. With this lamp project we wanted to create an object that has a sense of humor, a beautiful shape and a story that gives the users some thoughts maybe, and hopefully a smile on their faces.” [gallery order="DESC" columns="4" orderby="title"]
