“Danseurs lumineux pour le plafond.” “Luminous dancers for the ceiling.”
Les Danseuses is designed by Workshop Oi for (a brand within the Artemide group). Les Danseuses (French for dancers) was inspired by the whirling dance of the Dervishes. The Turkish word 'Darvesh' is a derivative of the Persian language, means 'Beggar'. A Dervish belongs, as a Christian monk, to the class of the Sufi Muslims. Tourists mainly know the Dervishes for their religious dancing. During this dance, the Dervishes seem to break free from the ground through their white swirling skirts. This phenomenon has been the inspiration for Les Danseuses.
A motor, attached to the suspension, causes the rotational motion. The unique whirl and shape of Les Danseuses creates its own motion and this phenomenon is partly explained by the Coriolis forces, the same forces that govern the physics of a hurricane. Les Danseuses are coordinated with a computer program to achieve a "real" choreography. Due to the movement of the lamp, the light will never be the same, creating a marvelous effect. The material for the Les Danseuses was selected due to the scattered light property and the use of two colors. The inside is lighter in color and is suitable for light reflection. The cuts in the material are related to the light; they screen and filter the light but also let it through even when the lamp is not moving. By changing the rotational speed, the drive will change from vertical to horizontal so Les Danseuses lights the whole area.
Available in the following color combinations: Grey – White, Grey – Light Blue, Ochre – Green and Fuchsia – Purple.
