London-born artist Benjamin Shine was commissioned by the CEO of Helsinn Pharmaceuticals to create a portrait of the CEO from the pill packaging of one of their main products. Upon receiving the white blister packaging, it was not immediately obvious to Shine how to do it. The idea struck him when he removed the foil from the back of the packs to allow light to illuminate certain blisters. When switched on, selected blisters light up to reveal the portrait image. The final piece has a double aesthetic, initially as a simple white texture of pill packs, and secondly, as the portrait itself.
Shine studied fashion design at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design and St Martins in London. Fashion, textiles and constructional ideas continue to inform Benjamin’s style and broad creative vision, establishing a multi-disciplined design approach that strives for purposeful, memorable and timeless design through innovation and originality. Works range from commercial products and inventions to limited edition designs, fashion collaborations and commissioned artworks.
