Arruda, Miguel

Miguel Arruda describes his work approach as, "very, very slow, but sure." He obtained his sculpture degree from the University of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 1968 and that in architecture from the Technical University of the same city. After initially focusing on sculpture and briefly delving into the design world, Arruda is now fully focused in his architectural work. He's designed and built for many years now, but remains immensely sensitive to artistic expression and the desire to experiment. A banal occurrence in 2010 prompted him to bring sculpture and architecture together in concrete form in the Habitable Sculpture. This cork volume was installed in the Olive Garden of the Belém Cultural Centre and Arruda has found it possesses boundless potential as a workshop for his studies on space, form and matter. The latest phase in his exploration centres on furniture made from a cork and rubber compound and, at Milan's Triennale, he currently displaying the prototypes, along with several sculptures.
