Varratta, Maurizio

He was born in 1955 in Genoa, capital of the province of Liguria, and in 1981 he graduated in architecture at the University of Genoa.

From 1981 to 1983 he worked freelance. Then he started collaborating with the Renzo Piano Building workshop, taking part in the development of numerous projects.
Among the most important are those connected with the development of Genoa’s underground (1983/1990), the restructuring, from 1989 to 1994,of Fiat’s Lingotto building in Turin’s, the design and completion of the “armchair system” for congress/concert halls in the “Lingotto”; in 1992/1993; the planning and the completion of Rome’s new “Auditorium”,and in 1997 the large-scale project for the completion of a new design museum in Varnamo, Sweden. In 1998/99 he oversaw the completion of Lecco’s Meridiana Centre project.
In 1995 he started working with Marco Nouvion and the same year he oversaw the development of the planning stage for the interchange station at Cunning town on the London underground.
He has taken part in numerous public competitions: in 1997/98 he won the public competition to design and build the “Autogrill” (motorway service station) for the year 2000, (organized by the Società Autogrill SpA Milano) and in 1999 he won a commendation for the Millenium Bridge design competition in London.
Since the end of the nineties he has also been designing exhibition stands and during the nineties he was employed as a professor at Turin Polytechnic.
