Vetterlein, Victor

Victor Vetterlein is quite a versatile guy. An American designer based in New York, he creates a vast array of design items from lamps made of a Gummy Bear-like substance you can eat, to futuristic stereos for MP3 players to crystal jewellery travel cases. While each piece is a unique design worthy of being a conversation piece, they all share an über simple approach to inventive designs.

Many of Vetterlein’s ideas can be mounted, bent, re-shaped or placed in a variety of ways. Involving new uses of materials, such as biodegradable plastic derived from a gelatin made from sea algae.

Trash Me table lamp is the epitome of Vetterlein’s ingenuity. As the name implies, the lamp is designed to be transient, because it’s made of the paper pulp from egg boxes. The pulp is poured over a mould, smoothed by hand and fastened with aluminium screws. At &tradition, Vetterlein’s (re)use of an everyday material in a new application coincides with our desire for ground-breaking ideas which re-think how we use materials. Designing an object from a recycled material – able to be recycled and reborn again as something new in the future.
